The imposing Art Deco Musée de l’Homme

Ming Tang-Evans/Apa Publications

Palais de Chaillot

Continuing west for a further 5 minutes brings you to place du Trocadéro and the Palais de Chaillot 4 [map]. This huge Art Deco complex was designed by a trio of architects (Boileau, Carlu and Azema) and contains three museums and a theatre. Major renovations are ongoing, so sections may be inaccessible.

First on your left, in the east wing, is the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (www.citechaillot.fr; Mon, Wed, Fri–Sun 11am–7pm, Thu 11am–9pm; charge), housing the world’s largest museum dedicated to architecture, charting France’s architectural history from cathedral portals and stained glass to Renaissance fountains up to contemporary buildings.

In the west wing is the Musée National de la Marine (www.musee-marine.fr; Mon, Wed–Fri 11am–6pm, Sat–Sun until 7pm; charge). Displays of cannon barrels, early torpedoes, uniforms and paintings take you from ancient galleons to nuclear submarines.

Also in the west wing is the Musée de l’Homme, although this museum is closed for renovation until 2015.

Finish the route by walking down the steps behind the Palais de Chaillot to the gardens with their magnificent views of the Eiffel Tower.
